For 18 months, “The Universal Soldier” Phil Shatter has defended the NWA National Heavyweight Championship with pride and honor. He’s battled with just about every top competitor in the United States and earlier this year he set his eyes on the top prize in pro wrestling, the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Championship. “At first, I never thought I’d get my shot, (Blue) Demon had the belt and he was always defending the title in some far off country, that was in 2008. It’s taken two years to build my resume and a great win/loss record. I’ve studied Pearce for years and I know his every move. I’ve been able to get in the ring with him four times for the title and he’s always gotten the best of me, but last week in Charlotte at the NWA Fan Fest, The Sheik totally messed up my game, that was my match” stated Shatter.

What Shatter is referencing is his last encounter with NWA Worlds Champion “Scrap Iron” Adam Pearce. The night before he was crowned the 2010 NWA Future Legend by beating a host of international talent during a 8 month long tournament and before the Championship match could begin, NWA North American Champion The Sheik attacked Pearce and the match was ruled a no contest and leaving Pearce knocked out cold for 6 minutes.

While Pearce lay helpless on the floor of the University Hilton’s ballroom, Shatter stood confused in the middle of the ring. “I was beside myself!” continued Shatter, here I am with my game face on, and ready to walk out the new NWA Worlds Champion and it was over before it began. I’m not sure if shocked is the word or even confused, all I know is I wanted that belt so bad that night. I wanted to win in front of my heroes in pro wrestling.”

Aside from the fans in attendance there also sat NWA Hall of Famers and Legends including two former NWA Worlds Champions Harley Race and Terry Funk. Once word got to the locker room about the attack, multi-time NWA Champion and Charlotte Matchmaker Tully Blanchard, NWA Executive Director Robert Trobich and announcer Les Thatcher went to aid Pearce allowing the attention to turn to this emergency and allowing the Sheik to flee the scene.

“It may have been the worse sign of bad sportsmanship I’ve seen in years” said Thatcher, “there was no reason for this attack, but Sheik just couldn’t wait for his opportunity.”

“I’ve been trying to keep Sheik at bay for months. I’ve done my best and I can’t keep him away from what he thinks he should have. He’s our North American Champion, but that’s not enough for this mad man. I’m totally afraid of what Sheik might do if he and Adam lock up…it’s going to be ugly,” states NWA Executive Rico Mann

“I spoke with Shatter before he went to the ring. He was high off his Future Legends win and he was telling me how this was ‘the night’, ‘his night’ and I believed him, but seeing Pearce the way he was, I had no other choice to throw the match out and declare it a no-contest” said Trobich.

Today Pearce is not a happy man. When we reached him this is all he had to say “The Sheik f…ed with the wrong man.”

So where does this leave Phil Shatter? Will he get another shot at the famous “10 lbs of gold”? I think only time will tell and I guess the better question is will it happen in Hollywood?

“I’m going to take a second to re-think my plan, don’t get me wrong, I will be the NWA Worlds Champion one day and I don’t care if the match takes place in Hollywood or on the moon. All I know is that Sheik needs to sleep with both eyes open, cause not only does he have Pearce pissed, I’m not happy either” said Shatter and he closed with “Phil Shatter – North American Champion has a nice ring to it…doesn’t it?

Pearce and The Sheik will both be at the NWA Championship Wrestling from Hollywood tapings on Aug 25. We’ll bring you reports if matchmakers sign them to a match or if all out chaos happens again.
